Come and explore with me the ROMAN AQUADUCT ~ PONT DU GARD in FRANCE 🇫🇷 It is located in Vers-du-Pont and dates back to the first Century AD. Build on 3 levels, about 50 meter high and stretches 275 meter over the river Gardon. Source.
A true engineering masterpiece. We will walk around it today, check out the view points at the sides and even cross it a few times. So we can enjoy all the stunning views of this beautiful ancient bridge. It was a cloudy day as you can see and we luckily won’t catch any rain, it is a bit windy though.

As you could read in my last post I am/ was on the road again and I probably would reach home yesterday. As soon as I could post again I would… read when I have internet and electricity to do so. Guess what; here I am as you can see… back home writing this post for you to enjoy in between washing, gardening… tending to my inside plants and catching up on so many things. As I have been away for 6 weeks to southern France and was driving all the way north slowly. It is a lot of work in the next few days. I had some crazy adventures on the road while enjoying the #vanlife (very basic though as it is a working van and no campervan)
I truly had a blast… and I hope to do this more once I start rebuilding the van after I moved myself and the belongings. (maybe… as nothing is set in stone for me haha) I will move before the next winter. No, I haven’t found the next place/ spot yet. Still working on it. Soon more about all of this hehe.

Shall we start with our walk today. It is nice you are joining me.
After parking the car we walk towards the entrance and see a map from the area around the aqueduct. If you look closely you see the 2 viewpoints on each side of the pont du gard that are both on higher grounds.
IMG_8346.jpeg

We walk over the paths towards the bridge and suddenly see it around a corner. It towers out over the trees.
IMG_8349.jpeg

Talking about trees, next to the path we find this beautiful old olive tree.
IMG_8350.jpeg

Next to it this stone with more information of the tree that is from 1908. The diameter of the trunk is 5 meters. So beautiful.
IMG_8415.jpeg

We wander further over the paths towards the bridge and peek through some trees and bushes. We see a little bit more from the aqueduct now. Can’t wait to see it better.
IMG_8354.jpeg

We are very close by and take in the roman architecture. Trust me it is large…
IMG_8351.jpeg

We start walking over it and have these views to one side of the bridge.
IMG_8355.jpeg

Crossing towards the other side we see this view. So stunning…
IMG_8357.jpeg

I like the view towards the first side. The beautiful house hidden behind trees on the cliff rocks.
IMG_8359.jpeg

We can walk all the way to the other side, there is even a little restaurant located following the tree alley.
IMG_8360.jpeg

We follow a path up, climbing steps… towards one of the view points. Along the way we see the bridge very up close.
IMG_8361.jpeg

At the top of the steps there is a gate into one of the parts of the aqueduct. Guided tours will walk you through and the gate is closed when they are not there. I didn’t join, but the friendly ladies of the tour pointed me to some awesome views further afield.
IMG_8363.jpeg

Here I am on that view point. One can see the top of the bridge well.
IMG_8365.jpeg

Walking down the steps we have some great views. Yes, there were lots of tourists and even a lot of school kids on a trip. I couldn’t avoid them in my photos… hehe
IMG_8367.jpeg

I walk over the bridge again and zoom in a bit further on that house in the distance. While I was standing there I hear something…
IMG_8368.jpeg

Crossing the bridge towards the sounds. I see kids jumping into the very cold water of the river. Their school friends yelling at them to encourage haha.
IMG_8372.jpeg

Here a closer view… bbbrrrr to cold for me.
IMG_8373.jpeg

As I crossed I take in the view from this side of the bridge.
IMG_8377.jpeg

The tree alley towards the restaurant. There is also a cave located next to it, very shallow… so nothing spectacular to be honest. The real gem is the roman aqueduct.
IMG_8378.jpeg

On this side of the river there are several paths down to the river bed. As I walk down I take this capture.
IMG_8380.jpeg

The water of the river isn’t that high on this side. And we can walk over the rocks…
IMG_8381.jpeg

To get some awesome views of the bridge stretching all the way over the river.
IMG_8390.jpeg

Zooming in for details.
IMG_8391.jpeg

On top of the rocks we can see the house that was hidden better.
IMG_8392.jpeg

I take a few photographs of it. It is placed in such a stunning location, don’t you think?
IMG_8394.jpeg

My view wandering over a pathway at the tree alley towards. Slowly back to the parking lot again as we have seen the aqueduct from every direction while wandering around it and over it.
IMG_8412.jpeg

Next to the path half way back I find this (abandoned) house between bushes and behind a large fence. I think it is the one I saw several times during our walk.
IMG_8416.jpeg

I didn't see it walking towards the bridge the first time as the view is hidden. Peeking through the bushes and zooming out a bit more. This would make a lovely home. I am sure it has been or still is for maybe half of it. The right side is boarded up and looked not lived in.
IMG_8417.jpeg

We reached the car and say bye bye.
If you are ever in this area of France, do and check out this lovely place. So much to see… as the area is rather large and one can spends some hours wandering around it and taking it all in.

…and here I say that’s all for today’s post my friends.
Join me next time for more updates, adventures, #stories and photographs.
Even my own artworks, once in a while, will come by.
Thank you so much for looking, and reading.
