Welcome, dear virtual friends!✨💜

Merida is a dream destination, which undoubtedly envelops you with all its landscapes, but also hides many mysteries in the sites that are visited in which have been passed from generation to generation. One of the legends that the guides mentioned to us on the way was the legend of the Loca Luz Caraballo, being this also one of our destination to visit, as this legend is honored in a poem and a monument, the latter is located in the town of apartaderos in the state of Merida, Venezuela to more than 3,400 meters above sea level. Being a very emblematic place of the Merida region surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery and a very characteristic cold climate.

¡Bienvenidos, queridos amigos virtuales!✨💜

The bus parked near a small hill when arriving to Apartaderos, and to observe the monument of the Loca Luz Caraballo we had to climb several steps (I do not remember the exact amount), however the climb seemed short and accessible, my companions and I had to climb slowly since the area is very cold and it was difficult to walk fast and breathe at the same time, in this way we also took the opportunity to admire the surroundings, and being a few steps closer we could appreciate the incredible monument of this legend. The closer we got to the monument, the silence enveloped you, it is as if the history of this place circulated through the cold wind and manifested in every stone of the road.

I confess that I had not heard of this legend until I was visiting some places in Mérida, so for me to hear her story and see the monument was very exciting. This monument is located in the center of the plaza and during the tour you will find inhabitants telling the legend, it is said that Luz Caraballo was a woman who lived in Timotes, Merida and that her life was marked by tragedy. According to her story this woman lost her husband and her five children during the War of Independence, desperate and full of pain Luz Caraballo lost her mind and began to walk through the Andes in search of her children. It is also said that her madness diverted the Spanish soldiers by pointing out the wrong path when they asked her about Bolivar, which is what helped them escape. Besides the monument, this story is immortalized by the poet Andrés Eloy in his poem “Palabreo de la Loca Luz Caraballo”.
The sculpture undoubtedly represents everything they say, a disheveled woman, with her arm outstretched, her gaze lost in time and even the silhouette of her worn clothes, being there and seeing it up close that story can feel more alive than one expects until you feel that this monument was guiding you to the paths of the Andes, Manuel de la Fuente author of this sculpture, no doubt completely captured the essence of the legend.

While touring the place near the monument there is a plaque with the complete poem written by Andres Eloy, although in photos it is not perfectly distinguishable in person it is completely understood, in fact some visitors recite it without reading and others reading it, for our part we stopped in silence to admire such a beautiful place with a great history.

It is inevitable not to be impressed with the landscape that is experienced in this site between that cloudy sky with gray and blue colors highlight the huge mountains giving a spectacular view between the cold weather, the mountains are full of frailejones, that being there transmits you so much peace. It was a beautiful experience in which I met and connected completely with history, I was here only a few minutes which were enough to admire all the details of this incredible site. I will never tire of saying that Merida is an incredible city full of culture and history.
